Last weekend, Japan became the first country in the world where the only laptop computer featuring an HD DVD-R drive, Toshiba’s Qosmio G30, can be bought at this time.
Since the disc format used by this computer is the read-only version of the HD DVD format, which is backed by Toshiba, it shouldn’t be a surprise the fact that Toshiba is also the company that made the first laptop capable to use it. (read more)

In most cases, the aura is defined as being an energy field that surrounds living beings, visible only to those born with the skill to see it, or those who developed this ability. Often described as a multi colored mist that has an assortment of boundaries and properties, the aura just got a new definition from Samsung!
The new line of laptops from Samsung is going to be called Aura, and the first model from the series, Aura R20, is going to arrive on the market this week. A worthy follower of the well known Q series, the Aura is a big step forward for Samsung, especially in terms of design. (read more)

Are you happy with the design of your laptop? Well, since customizing each one in the factory is an impossible thing to do, this leaves a good business opportunity available…
Since most desktop computers will be slowly replaced by portables in the future (at least that’s what I think), the need to personalize one’s computer should be fulfilled without any restraints, and I don’t have to tell you what has been accomplished in the desktop modes field, because a simple Google search can show you that. What I want to show you now is an interesting way to personalize your laptop, so let’s get back to the business I was talking about earlier now, shall we? (read more)

Almost fifteen years after the PowerBook Duo line of sub-notebooks made by Apple hit the market and about a decade after the withdrawal of the company from this market, it seems that Steve Jobs’ company is now working on something destined to bring them back into this game.
Yesterday, Computer World’s Ryan Faas took a look back at the previous sub-notebooks from Apple and tried to imagine how is going to be the future one. I always enjoy trips back into the computing’s history, and if we leave aside the PowerBook Duo line that we talked about last week, in Ryan’s article I found a reference to the eMate300, Apple’s light portable built for the educational market that ran the same operating system as Apple’s Newton PDA line (if you don’t remember that amazing gadget, then it’s enough to tell you that Newton was too soon, too expensive and too advanced for its time), but had a full keyboard and a clam-shell enclosure just like any regular laptop from the market. There’s no doubt that the world we’re living in today is usually about “more” than “better”, but from here to saying that “Apple is behind the market” and using the price of its laptops as main argument, it’s a long road. I said it before and I am saying it again now - I am not an Apple fan, and while using a Mac, I disable or simply ignore all the goodies, such as Spotlight, Expose or the Dashboard, but after having the chance to play with them, I can’t say that Apple’s computers are too expensive. Now, let me explain… (read more)

While everyone is running to grab the deal of the day and spare as much money as possible, LG hits the market with a laptop priced at 2,600$, so if you think this is way too much, no matter what it has, then you can skip this article. On the other hand, although I am sure I won’t afford a Lamborghini anytime soon, I always love reading about high end computers, cars and other similar things, so if you’re like me, ignore my previous advice and let’s move on… (read more)

I am not a big Apple fan, but I must admit that the iMac is one of the first things I would like to get in the near future, but this may change with the new VAIO L series from Sony. No, Sony didn’t start to manufacture computers able to run Apple’s Mac OS X, but they introduced a revolutionary concept with this new VAIO that reminds me of Apple’s all-in-one computer I just mentioned.

I know this may sound strange to you, especially since Apple Inc. is going uphill these days, but they are also getting smaller. Well, not the company itself, but its laptops…
Just as expected, the rumors about Apple returning to the sub-notebook computers world comes true, and we even got a date - the 11th of June (according to AppleInsider), this summer. Where is this going to happen? The Worldwide Developers Conference seems like a pretty good occasion, I am sure that you will agree with that!
While the Powerbook 2400 was too advanced, too soon, and too expensive when it arrived on the market, this time Apple seems to have learned its lesson and the new tiny MacBook is not going to feature any Star Trek technology. Anyway, expect to experience a taste of the future with this pint-size computer, because some technical details are already available… (read more)

The Lifebook series of laptop computers is one of those rare exceptions to the rule “every notebook is manufactured in China”, and the slogan used by these products doesn’t leave any doubt about this - “Made in Japan. World Class.”.
The Fujitsu Lifebooks are some of the smallest notebooks available, and the entire range is known in its country of origin as “BIBLIO”. Since these days you can’t just become the best and forget about progress, Fujitsu follows the flow of the market and makes its ultraportables even better…
According to Bruce Ford, a reader of GottaBeMobile.com, the new Lifebook from Fujitsu, codenamed “Helios”, can be seen at 3GSM Trade Fair in Barcelona, an event that’s going to end tomorrow. Although its pictures show a device almost completely covered, a press release from Fujitsu issued today seems to uncover some interesting things about the upcoming ultraportable… (read more)

Today’s IT business world is not for those that limit their field of view only to a certain range of products, and since Sony released its first docking station for Apple’s iPod less than two weeks ago, Toshiba didn’t sit back and wonder, but made its debut into the smartphone market with its first Windows Mobile phones, and its new weapons are called G500 and G900.
The G500 is capable of running Windows Mobile Standard, while the G900 is one of the first phones to support the latest operating system for such devices from Microsoft, Windows Mobile 6. The G900 comes with a slide-out QWERTY keyboard and a 3 inch VGA screen, and the features common with the G500 include a fingerprint sensor that can be used to tap and scroll through your applications as well, but if you are familiar with the Satellite and Portégé series from Toshiba, you will find all their features included into the two new products we’re talking about here too.
