SanDisk SSD SATA 5000

While some people may consider the solid state drives something that you can (still) live without, more and more companies start to deliver such devices on the market. Today, the time has come for Sundisk to show us what they got…

Their 2.5 inch solid state drive has a storage capacity of 32GB and was designed especially for laptops, as a hard drive replacement. Based on the NAND flash technology, the SanDisk SSD SATA 5000 2.5″ comes only two months after SanDisk introduced an 1.8 inch solid state drive.

The sustained transfer rate achieved by this drive is of 67 MB/s when reading data, and the random read rate goes up to 7000I/O operations per second (IOPS) for a 512-byte transfer, but if these figures don’t tell you much, I am sure that the Windows Experience Index for Vista of the drive should sound more interesting, since its value is 5.6 out of 5.9 possible!

On a laptop, this drive can boot Vista in 30 seconds, being able of an average file access rate of 0.11 milliseconds, while keeping the power consumption low, at 0.9W during active operation, versus 1.9W for a regular hard drive.

The price of this drive is 350$, but it seems that only computer manufacturers can get it at this time…
