Seagate Technology has announced Momentus, what it is calling the world’s first 7,200rpm 160GB laptop hard drive using perpendicular recording technology.

This is the second generation of the company’s Momentus range of 2.5-inch hard drives and is available in capacities of up to 160GB. 80GB, 100GB and 120GB capacity drives are also being made available.

It combines a fast Serial ATA 3.0 Gb/s interface with 7,200rpm spin speed to enable the highest- performance laptops ever. The drive is available with a free-fall sensor to help prevent damage and data loss if you drop your laptop.

The company claims its drives to be virtually inaudible when in use and that the drives have low power consumption requirements.

“The growing number of computer users turning to laptops as their primary computers want every inch of the capacity, performance and durability they enjoy in their desktops,” said Michael Wingert, Seagate executive vice president and general manager.
