Apple Spring New(bie)s

Mar 04 2007 | Apple

I don’t know about your location, but I feel the spring is already here, and this makes me think about Apple’s spring. The reason is that this year’s spring may be the best one so far for the Cupertino-based company, and the main reason is the iPhone, but things are much bigger than just that…

iphone

Anyway, since I mentioned the iPhone, let me tell you about it first. Of course that you all have heard about the amazing features that come with this device, but it’s not that. The main question now is “When”, and according to some rumors, we may have the iPhone earlier than expected. The informers that were talking about this say that US residents may be able to get an iPhone from Apple before next month’s end, so keep your eyes open! (read more)

How to replace your laptop LCD

Mar 03 2007 | Asus, Fujitsu, LG, Samsung, Dell, Apple, Acer, Toshiba, Sony, HP, Brand

lcd replacementOnce you got a laptop of your own, the worst thing that can happen to it, apart from being stolen or blowing up in smoke, is to develop problems that require a mainboard replacement. The next in line is the LCD replacing, second costly repair that you may need to pay for, and today we’re going to show you how to do it yourself. Are you ready?

First of all, you should have the following tools at hand: a small Phillips screw driver, paper and pencil for documentation (or simply a printer with enough paper loaded), and a little bit of tape to keep the screws together.

Now, nobody got its technical knowledge over night, so before everything else, you should take your time and do some research on the Web. You need to know exactly what kind of display you need, so you won’t order the wrong replacement. (read more)

Dreaming about a sub-notebook from Apple

Feb 22 2007 | Apple, Brand

AppleAlmost fifteen years after the PowerBook Duo line of sub-notebooks made by Apple hit the market and about a decade after the withdrawal of the company from this market, it seems that Steve Jobs’ company is now working on something destined to bring them back into this game.

Yesterday, Computer World’s Ryan Faas took a look back at the previous sub-notebooks from Apple and tried to imagine how is going to be the future one. I always enjoy trips back into the computing’s history, and if we leave aside the PowerBook Duo line that we talked about last week, in Ryan’s article I found a reference to the eMate300, Apple’s light portable built for the educational market that ran the same operating system as Apple’s Newton PDA line (if you don’t remember that amazing gadget, then it’s enough to tell you that Newton was too soon, too expensive and too advanced for its time), but had a full keyboard and a clam-shell enclosure just like any regular laptop from the market. Apple’s notebooks - outdated?

Feb 21 2007 | Apple, Brand

AppleThere’s no doubt that the world we’re living in today is usually about “more” than “better”, but from here to saying that “Apple is behind the market” and using the price of its laptops as main argument, it’s a long road. I said it before and I am saying it again now - I am not an Apple fan, and while using a Mac, I disable or simply ignore all the goodies, such as Spotlight, Expose or the Dashboard, but after having the chance to play with them, I can’t say that Apple’s computers are too expensive. Now, let me explain… (read more)

The Apples are getting smaller

Feb 16 2007 | Apple

macbook-mini-070214-0-small.gifI know this may sound strange to you, especially since Apple Inc. is going uphill these days, but they are also getting smaller. Well, not the company itself, but its laptops…

Just as expected, the rumors about Apple returning to the sub-notebook computers world comes true, and we even got a date - the 11th of June (according to AppleInsider), this summer. Where is this going to happen? The Worldwide Developers Conference seems like a pretty good occasion, I am sure that you will agree with that!

While the Powerbook 2400 was too advanced, too soon, and too expensive when it arrived on the market, this time Apple seems to have learned its lesson and the new tiny MacBook is not going to feature any Star Trek technology. Anyway, expect to experience a taste of the future with this pint-size computer, because some technical details are already available… (read more)

Apple Mac Book Smaller than Ever with an Optical Disc Drive at the bottom

Jan 29 2007 | Apple, New releases

apple-optical-disc-drive-bottom-mac-book-small.jpgLast week Apple announced plans to release a new, smaller Apple Mac Book. According to AppleInsider, Apple has been trying to come up with ways of making their notebook PCs smaller. One such way that they have come up with, and will soon be patented, is to place the balky optical disc drive(ODD) at the very bottom of the laptop, instead of along the side edge of the laptop like is typically done in laptops.

Some people have questioned this idea, as it makes it somewhat harder to use the ODD. However, whatever small inconvenience this causes users, Apple more than makes up for it with a thinner laptop that is easier to handle.

Apple’s next-gen MacBook Pro with new LED technology

Jan 22 2007 | Apple, New releases

Apple’s next-gen MacBook Pro with new LED technologyAccording to AppleInsider, Apple plans on releasing a new MacBook pro line. The new notebooks’ display screen will feature new backlight technology.

Previously, Apple’s MacBooks featured cathode fluorescent backlights, also known as CCFLs. The use of LED backlights in the MacBook should mark the gradual end of the use of CCFLs. At present time, Apple only plans on implementing the newer technology in the 15-inch MacBook Pro. However, it is expected that Apple will eventually use the LED backlights on the 17-inch and 13-inch models of the MacBook.

The LED technology is more expensive than traditional CCFLs, but according to AppleInsider Kasper Jade, makes up for it in terms of better lighting and less consumption of power. In fact, the LED-based screens have more battery life, run cooler and last significantly longer than do the CCFLs.
