Dell is one of those companies that wouldn’t have been around if IBM wouldn’t let the others clone its original IBM PC, but since this happened, everything that followed is now history, and I am not here to teach you history. After all, I have in front of me a gorgeous Dell P991 CRT monitor that makes my hours spent in front of my computer a real pleasure, so I must admit that I may be a little subjective in my review, because I love Dell’s products, especially since this is not the only Dell product that I had to face so far, but enough with the chatter and let’s get down to business, shall we?

On Tuesday, Microsoft’s new operating system, Windows Vista, officially hit the stores. Many PC manufacturers—including Dell—have started to preload their PCs with Vista. Dell CEO Kevin Rollins said that Dell has experienced a great demand for their new Vista-loaded laptop PCs. In fact, on Saturday and Sunday of last week, thousands of orders were placed for the new Dell laptops.
Dell laptops with Windows Vista have greater capabilities. Users of these new laptops can record and watch high definition videos, organize photo and music libraries and many more things. The Vista experience is vibrant, high-lighted by great graphics and a good user interface.
To accommodate the anticipated demand for Vista support, Dell has hired more employees.
“Because Dell sells direct, we’re among the first to see just how excited customers are about Windows Vista,” said Mr. Rollins. “To ensure a great customer experience, we’ve trained thousands of contact center representatives on Windows Vista. They’re ready to help our customers as they transition to this great new operating system.”

This week Dell unveiled a laptop to compete with Panasonic’s Toughbook laptop PC. The Dell Latitude ATG D620 is designed to work in even the most extreme environments and to not break down like other laptops would. For Dell, this marks their first venture into the rugged laptops department.
“The Latitude ATG is a prime example of Dell’s commitment to customer-driven innovation,” said Jeff Clarke, senior vice president Dell Product Group. “We have heard from customers loud and clear that a tougher, highly protective notebook with a screen that is easy to see outdoors is necessary in many lines of work. We’re glad that we could meet that customer request with a product distinguished by industry-leading features.”
The ATG D620 has a shock-mounted hard drive and spill-resistant keyboard. It also features port covers and specially hardened paint so that it will hold up in even the harshest conditions.

Dell announced that the XPS M1710, their highest-end multimedia notebook, will feature Blue Ray Discs technology, that will give users more storage space and additional DVD features.
Blue-Ray discs are high-density optical discs that can store large amounts of data and digital content (including high definition) and that allow reading and writing high-definition videos. A blue-ray disk is able to store 50GB of data, which is five times more than a DVD’s capacity.
“Blue-ray optical drive technology has gained broad industry support and we believe it will become the optical drive standard of the future” said Alex Gruzen, senior vice president, Dell Product Group.

Dell announced that its latest notebooks are now ready for Windows Vista and Microsoft Office 2007’s requirements. This was accomplished by a software which is based on a migration strategy and which has the purpose to speed up and simplify the transition.
